As humanidades em regresso: a memória como experiência do futuro

Não me proponho discutir nesta reflexão o estatuto epistemológico das ciências ditas humanas (haverá algumas que o não sejam?), nem a história da sua instituição e desenvolvimentos, nem cuidar do seu relevo social tão diminuído ou do lugar institucional tão desvalorizado ou da função pedagógica tão posta em causa: irrelevância como saber, ineficácia como intervenção, desfasamento em relação aos avanços em outras áreas do conhecimento, são os traços maiores de uma prolongada crise de legitimação das Humanidades, a que se vem juntar a insegurança dos que as cultivam quanto à natureza e títulos de afirmação do seu campo disciplinar. Também não me vou ocupar da utilidade presumível destas no sistema de ensino ou no regime cultural vigente; isso seria socorrer-me de uma razão instrumental, o mais elementar tipo de racionalidade.
Não vou sequer defender um impossível retorno das Humanidades de um mundo precedente, como por vezes muitos títulos se arriscam a parecer presumir: em história, todo o regresso ou é uma ilusão ou uma mera ficção heurística. E não sei se a actualidade indicia, de facto, uma viragem.
I do not propose to discuss in this reflection the epistemological status of the so-called human sciences (are there any that are not?), nor the history of their institution and developments, nor to take care of their so diminished social relevance or their so devalued institutional place or their pedagogical function so called into question: irrelevance as knowledge, ineffectiveness as intervention, delay in relation to advances in other areas of knowledge, are the main features of a prolonged crisis of legitimacy of the Humanities, to which is added the insecurity of those who cultivate them regarding affirmative nature and titles of their disciplinary field. Nor will I deal with their presumed usefulness in the education system or in the current cultural regime; that would be to help me with an instrumental reason, the most elementary kind of rationality.
I'm not even going to defend an impossible return of the Humanities from a previous world, as many titles sometimes venture to assume: in history, every return is either an illusion or a mere heuristic fiction. And I don't know if the actuality actually indicates a turning point.
