Abstract
Marc-Amédée Gromier’s proposal brought together Portuguese political trends of different nature in favour of national integration in an integrative pattern, tending to the formation of a unified Latin bloc, capable of matching the economic dynamics and political ascendancy of the German and English Empires in the Old World and, by extension, in regional areas under the tutelage or influence of other European imperial systems. The vision of Latin Europe, attached to Gromier’s perspective, carried in the national political space and discourse: disconnected from the question of regime, resurfaced fully in the debate on Portuguese participation in the Great War, a context of reformulation of the basic foundations of Latin Europe and its role in the conflict and in the subsequent world order.
